The protons and neutrons in a nucleus can form strongly correlated nucleon pairs. Scattering experiments, in which a proton is knocked out of the nucleus with high-momentum transfer and high missing momentum, show that in carbon-12 the neutron-proton pairs are nearly 20 times as prevalent as proton-proton pairs and, by inference, neutron-neutron pairs. This difference between the types of pairs is due to the nature of the strong force and has implications for understanding cold dense nuclear systems such as neutron stars.  相似文献

MyD88 is a key downstream adapter for most Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and interleukin-1 receptors (IL-1Rs). MyD88 deficiency in mice leads to susceptibility to a broad range of pathogens in experimental settings of infection. We describe a distinct situation in a natural setting of human infection. Nine children with autosomal recessive MyD88 deficiency suffered from life-threatening, often recurrent pyogenic bacterial infections, including invasive pneumococcal disease. However, these patients were otherwise healthy, with normal resistance to other microbes. Their clinical status improved with age, but not due to any cellular leakiness in MyD88 deficiency. The MyD88-dependent TLRs and IL-1Rs are therefore essential for protective immunity to a small number of pyogenic bacteria, but redundant for host defense to most natural infections.  相似文献

The Podzol has been elected “Soil of the year 2007” in Germany. This article reviews the present knowledge on the development, functions, and threats of Podzols. The main theories on mobilization and transport of organic matter, Fe, Al, and Si are (1) metal‐organic migration, (2) metal reduction, and (3) inorganic sol migration. Immobilization theories include precipitation or polymerization due to increasing pH/abundance of base cations with depth, mechanical filtering in soil pores, oxidation of metal‐organic complexes, biodegradation of the organic part, decreasing C‐to‐metal ratios during translocation, adsorption to soil particles, and flocculation at the point of zero charge. Podzolization is discussed also on the catena scale, where vertical and lateral translocation processes (across pedon boundaries) need to be considered to understand Podzol patterns in landscapes. Chronosequence studies show that incipient podzolization usually becomes visible between 100 and 500 y and mature Podzols develop in 1,000–6,000 y. The occurrence of Podzols worldwide is concentrated mainly on the boreal zone and mountain regions within the humid temperate zone. Smaller Podzol areas are found in some perhumid tropical and subtropical regions. In Germany, Podzols occur in the Alps, in the glaciofluvial valleys and heathlands of N Germany, and in the mountain ranges. They fulfil several ecological functions, especially for groundwater recharge. Main threats for these mostly sandy soils are wind erosion and surface mining of sand. Two pedons which were chosen to represent the “Soil of the year 2007” are presented. Finally, some conclusions about podzolization processes are drawn, which may explain the diverse observations reported in the literature.  相似文献

Basalt Weathering and Soil Development since the Middle Tertiary on Lanzarote, Canary Islands - The Profile Malaya Chica A polygenetic soil on tertiary (miocene) basalt in the north of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain) was examined. Soil development was reconstructed, which took place in a semiarid climate since the end of the tertiary period. The interpretation of field and laboratory results (carbonate, grainsize distribution, oxalate and dithionithe soluble oxides, CEC, clay minerals, micromorphology) explained the history of development. Since the miocene at least seven consecutive phases of soil development took place induced by erosion, volcanic and colluvial sedimentation and/or climatic changes.  相似文献

The proteins from Vicia sativa L. (common vetch) seeds were investigated. Protein comprises approximately 11.4% of the seed fresh weight, >50.8% of which is composed by globulins and 43.6% by albumins. The globulins may be fractionated into two main components, which were named alpha-vicinin (comprising 73% of the total globulin fraction, and hence >37% of the total seed protein) and beta-vicinin. Two minor globulin components are also present, gamma-vicinin and delta-vicinin. alpha-Vicinin, the legumin-like globulin, with a sedimentation coefficient of 10.6 S, is a nonglycosylated, disulfide-bond-containing globulin, composed of a group of subunits with molecular masses ranging from 50 to 78 kDa. Upon reduction, each of these subunits releases a heavy polypeptide chain (34-66 kDa) and a light polypeptide chain (21-23 kDa). beta-Vicinin, the vicilin-like globulin, with a sedimentation coefficient of 7.7 S, is a nonglycosylated globulin that contains no disulfide bonds and consists of two major polypeptides with molecular masses of 58 and 66 kDa. gamma-Vicinin is a minor, glycosylated, disulfide-bond-containing globulin. In the reduced form, it comprises six polypeptide chains with molecular masses of 12, 19, 21, 22, 23, and 31 kDa. Finally, delta-vicinin is a minor, highly glycosylated globulin that exhibits hemagglutinating activity. It is composed of a major 47 kDa polypeptide and two minor (33 and 38 kDa) polypeptides. N-terminal sequencing of the delta-vicinin 47 kDa polypeptide revealed no homology to any other known storage protein.  相似文献

The condensation reaction between malvidin 3-glucoside and catechin mediated by isobutyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, and isovaleraldehyde was conducted in model solutions at two pH values (1.5 and 3.2). The formation of new alkyl/aryl-linked adducts corresponding to the structures malvidin 3-glucoside-isobutylcatechin, malvidin 3-glucoside-benzylcatechin, and malvidin 3-glucoside-3-methylbutylcatechin was respectively observed from each aldehyde. The structural characterization of these new structures has been elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR, mass spectrometry, and UV-vis techniques. These new adducts showed the same lambda(max) in the visible region at 540 nm, which is bathochromically shifted 15 nm when compared with the original anthocyanin (lambda(max) = 525 nm).  相似文献

A number of alternative approaches have been suggested during recent years to predict species richness of a given taxa, while retaining information on the identities of the observed individuals. Such information can be extremely useful for choosing conservation priority areas, either by using simple richness values or, preferentially, by considering the complementarity of potential sites. Among the most popular approaches is the use of higher taxa surrogates. Both family and genus richness are here tested in their ability to predict the number of spider (Araneae) species independently of sampling effort, geographical location and type of habitat. We use data from three Portuguese protected areas as a test case. Genus richness is considered a good surrogate of species richness, despite some caution being needed regarding the comparison of sites with considerably different sampling effort, the same not happening with families. Only genera are also found to be reliable either for ranking sites according to taxa richness or for determining near-minimum sets of sites for conservation. We therefore recommend surrogacy at this taxonomic level as a promising approach for the prediction of spider species richness or evaluation and ranking of areas according to their conservation importance. The reached conclusions should uphold for Portugal and the entire Mediterranean region.  相似文献

Two forest soils (Typic Dystrochrept, Entic Haplorthod) with mor and moder were investigated by chemical degradation, IR and CPMAS 13C NMR spectroscopy and pyrolysis (Py) field ionization (FI) mass spectrometry (MS). Chemical analyses show that during litter decomposition, humification, and podzolisation, cellulose and lignin structures decrease considerably, whereas no distinct changes were found for the hemicellulose and protein fractions. These results are consistent with current hypotheses on the conversion of plant residues to stable humic substances, but the sum of chemically identified organic soil components of the litter layers only accounts for 40–50% of total organic carbon. The amounts of different carbon types were estimated by the integration of CPMAS 13C NMR spectra. For the L layers this calculation assigns 56–58% as O-alkyl-C, 20–22% as alkyl-C, 14–16% as aryl-C, and 6–8% as carboxyl-C. With increasing soil depth O-alkyl-C (with polysaccharides as main source) decrease to 31–42%, aliphatic C increases to 36–43%, and aryl- and carboxyl-C show no distinct changes. The hypothesis of an increasing aromaticity during humification in soils therefore is questionable. Data from Py-FIMS confirm and extend the results' of chemical methods as well as IR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In particular, the Fi mass spectra of the generated pyrolysates show that the increase in polymethylene carbon during the biodegradation and humification of beech and spruce litter is partly due to an increase of saturated fatty acids. This means, Py-FIMS is able to describe the structure of wet-chemically unaccounted, individual humus constituents and thus improves the knowledge about the genesis of humic substances.  相似文献

Total phenolics, ascorbic acid, and betalain contents of differently colored cactus pear clones (nine Opuntia ficus-indica [L.] Mill. clones and one O. robusta Wendl. clone) were investigated and related to their respective antioxidant potential assessed by Trolox-equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. TEAC and ORAC values were very highly correlated with each other and also with values for total phenolics, betalain contents, and ascorbic acid concentrations. Total phenolics had the greatest contribution to ORAC and TEAC values. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-diode array detector (DAD)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) measurements of cactus pear juices permitted the differentiation of the clones based on variations in pigment patterns and betalain concentrations. The red and yellow betalains were absent in lime green colored cactus fruits. The ratio and concentration of these pigments were responsible for the yellow, orange, red, and purple colors in the other clones. Progeny of purple and lime green colored parents were characterized by 12% and 88% of plants bearing lime green and purple fruit, respectively. This implies that the genes for betalain production were lacking in the lime green fruits but could be provided by a parent with a complete set of genes, that is, purple fruits. Besides known pigments typical of Cactaceae, two unexpected betalains were identified. Whereas gomphrenin I was found for the first time in tissues of cactus plants, methionine-betaxanthin has never been described before as a genuine betalain. In addition to their alleged health-promoting properties, various combinations of yellow betaxanthins and red-purple betacyanins may allow the development of new food products without using artificial colorants.  相似文献

Despite recent reports in the literature that chitinases comprise approximately 50% of the soluble proteins present in mature Vitis vinifera L. (cv. Moscatel) grapes, with the other major proteins being thaumatin-like proteins, a careful inspection of the published data reveals inconsistencies as to which proteins actually accumulate in mature grapes. Mature Moscatel grapes were harvested in the same vineyard in two consecutive years, 1999 and 2000. The grapes exhibited widely distinct polypeptide patterns when analyzed by either FPLC cation exchange chromatography or two-dimensional electrophoresis: whrereas the 2000 grapes possessed a much higher protein content (1.96 versus 1.11 mg g(-)(1) of fresh weight), the 1999 grapes contained a greater heterogeneity of polypeptides. In addition, highly specific antibodies that recognize the pathogenesis-related proteins present in the grapes demonstrated that the 2000 harvest grapes had a wider variety of pathogenesis-related polypeptides. N-Terminal sequencing of the major polypeptides revealed differences in the relative abundance and amino acid sequence of thaumatin-like and osmotin-like polypeptides present in the 1999 and 2000 harvest Moscatel grapes and did not detect the presence of chitinase. As a whole, the data indicate that the expression and accumulation of the major proteins in grapes is essentially determined by the environmental and/or pathological conditions prevailing during grape development and maturation. The potential physiological and technological implications are discussed. The results of the present work suggest that it is not possible to base varietal differentiation of grapes on the profile of the pathogenesis-related polypeptides present in the mature berries.  相似文献
